Visiting the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in North Carolina's Outer Banks
By Meg Brunson
I am a sucker for unique museums, and really wanted an excuse to drive all the way down to Hatteras, NC on the Outer Banks - which is why we absolutely had to visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum!
The museum offers free admission, and they accept (and operate off of) donations. When you walk in, there is a welcome desk immediately inside the door and they have a scavanger hunt for the kids to do. This really helps the kids stay attentive as they explore the museum, and buys adults who want to read things a little extra time to do so!
The museum is focused on a variety of shipwrecks that have occured along the Outer Banks and the information (and artifacts) were really interesting! The 90s kid in me loved reading about a shipwreck involving a ship carrying Doritos, which resulted in thousands of bags of Doritos washing ashore! There was also an exhibit focused on pirates who had ties to the Outer Banks. After completing their scavenger hunt, each kid turned them in for a special prize!
We also loved that there was an activity room with books, puzzles, a theater area, and knot-tying. The kids enjoyed all of these interactive activities that were all tied in to the maritime theme of the museum.
Truly a unique museum in a beautiful section of the Outer Banks - definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, or if you're searcing for an area to explore - the Outer Banks has SO much to offer! Learn more and start planning your trip at https://graveyardoftheatlantic.com/
