COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL INDIANAPOLIS PUBLIC LIBRARY BRANCHES

As efforts continue to contain the coronavirus, The Indianapolis Public Library has announced the postponement of all public programs and the continued closure of all Library facilities until further notice. Programs impacted in April include the Marian McFadden Memorial Lecture with award-winning author/illustrator Kadir Nelson and appearances by authors Sarah Urist Green and Nikki Grimes, with efforts being made to reschedule for later this year. Other events such as the Indy Library Store Book Sale, U.S. Census help sessions, and the Library’s many storytimes and computer classes are canceled. Delayed will be the grand opening of the new Martindale-Brightwood Branch and the groundbreaking for the new West Perry Branch.

The InfoZone, the Library’s branch within The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13.

The decision by the Library’s Board of Trustees and Library leadership was made in conjunction with similar decisions by Marion County schools and other institutions to help prevent the spread of the virus and to ensure the health and safety of Library patrons, staff and volunteers.

“We did not come to this decision lightly,” said Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes. “We are closing to protect the health of our city, staff and patrons for whom we care deeply. Closing sooner will offer greater benefit to the social distancing effort to limit the spread of the COVID-19 coronaviris.”

During the period of closure, individuals can still visit the Library online at www.indypl.org to explore its vast collection of electronic resources such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming movies and music, and a host of research tools, all free with the use of a Library card.

In addition, any overdue items during this time will have extended due dates until the Library reopens. Any items placed on hold will remain for patrons to pick up upon reopening.

Patrons are encouraged to visit the Library’s online blog and social media channels for updates on the closure and tips on using online resources.
