The history of poetry for protest and organizing. Short poems used to be used as a means of communication for rebellions because they were easy to remember. Most protest songs are poetry. Even the chants at protests today are poems. Join poet and recording artist Ursula Rucker and poet, activist, curator and educator, Nina “Lyrispect” Ball in conversation with our series host, Ginger Rudolph, for a look at the deep history and long connection between poetry and activism.

Art has played a major role in activism since time immemorial. From iconic protest posters to heart wrenching protest songs and poetry, to the performance art of direct action, art is a catalyst for change.

The Art of Activism explores the process of creating art with the intention of moving people and policy - and how artists do that even in these complex days as shifting societal norms alter both art and protest. What is the role of art in advocacy and what motivates artists to become activists?

Join poet and recording artist Ursula Rucker and poet, activist, curator and educator, Nina “Lyrispect” Ball in conversation with our series host, Ginger Rudolph, for a look at the deep history and long connection between poetry and activism.
